Those moves signalled the Red and White were definitely moving on from Maier, who had become the starter for the CFL club two-plus years ago.

Right or wrong, he was a lightning rod for what ailed the Stamps in two straight seasons of struggles with him as the starter.
You’ll recall it was a tough gig for a young QB to live up to, since he took the place of hall-of-famer-to-be Bo Levi Mitchell, a legend around these parts.
Despite the criticism, Maier had nothing but positive things to say about Calgary after the trade was made.
“A city where great/lifelong relationships were built, a city where my family felt at home, and a place where my daughter was born,” Maier posted on social media.
“Love and appreciate the coaches and teammates I had the privilege to work with.
“Lastly, thank you to the fans for all of your support.
Maier started 45-of-65 games over four seasons with the Red and White.
QB completed 1,022-of-1,497 passes for 11,685 yards with 60 touchdowns and 39 interceptions.

He also rushed 60 times for 232 yards and five touchdowns.
Maier, 27, completed 357-of-494 passes for 3,841 yards with 22 TDs and 14 interceptions last season, which saw the Stamps (5-12-1) miss the playoffs for the first time since 2004.
The Stampeders acquired veteran Vernon Adams Jr.
The deal gives the Roughriders a window to negotiate exclusively with Maier, who’s slated to become a free agent on Feb.
With the Riders having just re-signed veteran starter Trevor Harris to a one-year contract extension, Maier is pencilled in to be the Riders’ backup pivot.
The team is likely to see last year’s backup, Shea Patterson, who produced well during Harris’ absence for seven games in 2024, test free agency in February.
Perhaps Maier will enjoy more success with the Riders, since the offensive coordinator in Regina is Marc Mueller, who was Maier’s QB coach from 2021-23 with the Stamps.

Also Monday, the Stampeders re-upped offensive lineman Zack Williams to a two-year contract that will keep the Winnipeg native with the Red and White through the 2026 season.
A third-round draft selection by the Stampeders in 2019, Williams has played a combined 66 regular-season and playoff games for Calgary over the past five seasons.
“Zack is another one of the young Canadians who is part of our foundation,” said Stampeders GM/head coach Dave Dickenson.
“We feel he’s the type of player we want to build with, and we’re glad to have him back.”
In 2024, the University of Manitoba Bisons alum started 12 games, making seven starts at right guard and five at left guard, and was part of a unit that allowed the second-fewest sacks in the CFL.
Williams missed six games in August and September with a calf injury before returning to action in Week 16.
“I’m thrilled to be continuing my journey with the Stampeders,” said the 27-year old Williams.
“This team has become a second family to me, and I’m excited to contribute to our shared vision of success in the seasons to come.

“We’ve got a great group of players, coaches and fans, and I’m looking forward to making even more memories with this incredible organization.”
Before joining the Stamps, Williams played four seasons with the U SPORTS’ Manitoba Bisons.
He was a Canada West all-star in 2018, as he helped the Bisons accumulate 1,345 rushing yards — just 21 yards shy of the conference lead — and an average of 467.3 yards of total offence per game.
He enrolled at Manitoba after a stint with the Winnipeg Rifles in the Canadian Junior Football League.
Williams in the third round of the 2019 CFL Draft.
And that kind of continuity, coupled with his élite talent, is going to help the revamped QB room in Calgary.
